I had a great day at Knife River Hidatsa Villages NHS. Our northern plains view of the Eclipse was great & it was so good to visit friends I haven't seen in a while.
Awesome to see the preserved culture. How else will the children of our children learn our culture.
The indoor display has kid-friendly "PLEASE TOUCH" signs all over. The place is very well-kept, and the staff are friendly. The earth lodge is a unique experience - you can go inside and look at the staged living area and see the structure of the lodge. It appears to have been constructed the old fashioned way - right down to the sticks making up the roof over your head. A real must-see! The trail to the river is well-maintained and there are sturdy rest benches every few hundred yards. The actual view on the trail calls for a little more imagination to enjoy it, and (in my opinion) wasn't quite worth the walk on a hot day. On the whole, I would recommend stopping here if you're in the area. Plan for 1.5 - 2 hours for indoor learning, going in the lodge, and walking the trail.
Very interesting with knowledgeable staff. Nice exhibit inside and the recreation of the Mandan house outside was great, nice and cool even on a 90 deg F day. The trail out to the old village locations was very interesting too.
Very educational experience. Enjoyed the replica of the Indian home. Wish I had time to hike the trail. Would stop again.
